How to get into the Energy Sector

Energy is a sector that provides power not only to ordinary consumers but also other industrial sectors. The energy industry now encompasses roles in numerous sub-industries, and if you’re interested in entering this field it’s important for your understanding what options might be available so you can make an informed decision about your future career path!

Energy is a big deal. It powers our world and makes everything go, but what exactly does it mean? The energies located in different areas can be described by their sources- whether they’re exploring new ones or refining old favourites for shorter term use with greater efficiency (refining becomes more intense when looking at how much energy you get out).

These different sectors include:

There are various sources of energy associated with this industry, including:

  • Petroleum
  • Natural gas
  • Coal
  • Nuclear power
  • Wind power
  • Solar power
  • Hydropower
  • Biofuel
  • Hydrogen
  • Geothermal

Energy sources are often categorized by their renewable or nonrenewable status. Renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, come from naturally occurring materials that can be replenished versus Non-Renewables.

In contrast there is also a third category known as “renewably sourced” which includes both types but with one twist: these methods don’t run out after use because they were created through scientific processes still unknown to us humans! One example would likely include nuclear fusion.

Other organizations are definable by their position in the energy supply chain, such as:

  • Upstream: An upstream company deals directly with energy sources, exploring potential areas where they can access and extract fuel, such as oil fields.
  • Midstream: A midstream company is in the business of storing, transporting or marketing energy sources. A pipeline transportation or logistics operation would qualify as a midstream company.
  • Downstream: A downstream company receives an energy source through upstream and midstream channels and produces a usable product out of it. A common type of downstream operation is an oil refinery, which turns crude oil into goods for the end user, such as gasoline.

To be successful in the energy sector, you should do your research and stay up-to-date on trends.

A functional area is key to getting started; this could include joining an association or learning more about how things work within that particular field through courses taught by professionals who have already entered into those areas as well!

Look at entry level positions available. Some careers in the energy industry allow you to gain experience without having any previous work-related qualifications.

On-the job training or apprenticeships are common for these positions, which means that there is often an opportunity at the entry level available through well known companies within your field of interest.

If identifying who those potential employers might be has been difficult so far then conduct some research on them before applying; this will help ensure success!
